Mom's Lap
Graham sculpted little Grammy a thick foam seat bottom and
back that allows Graham to ride solo in the back seat. The
seat bottom has a horn like on a horse saddle to safely
hold the little man in the belts clear of the controls. In
this picture you can clearly see that Grammy sits high
enough for a great view. Freddy has another happy
passenger.
Miss the white paint spots? I couldn't stand it so I
touched up the picture a bit. :^)
Little Grammy Lashley Soars
Sunday
8/8/2010 was a very exciting day for our latest members, the Lashley
family. Little Grammy started out his afternoon on Dad's lap in the
Super Cub back seat. Tow pilot Rick Jones gave them a ride around the
pattern. An hour later he was on Mom's lap in the back seat of the Ka7.
His glider pilot was sixteen year old Freddy Wendland.
Pictured to the left is Grammy's Mom Petra, Grammy and glider pilot
Freddy. Click
HERE for more pictures.
Grammy and his Dad Graham came back to the field in the late
afternoon and gave us an update. Grammy was still flying high. He was
so excited that he couldn't lay down for his afternoon nap.
Guest From Germany
On Sunday August 8th Julie Foote brought
two
young sisters visiting from Menden Germany out to the field in hopes
that they would take a ride. The sister's family had earlier hosted
Julie's daughter in Germany. The girls were visiting the United States
for a few weeks so Julie and Scott helped them experience North Carolina
from tent camping in the mountains to visiting the beach.
Both young ladies were very nervous about going up in a small plane
much less one with no engine. They also each expressed being afraid of
heights. It was explained that the flight experience is much different
from that of being on a ladder or tall building. They both enjoyed their
flights and were glad they didn't pass it up. They're pictured above
with glider pilot Rick Jones and the K7.
The Libelle Flies Again
East
Carolina Soaring Club member Freddy Wendland recently flew his newly acquired Glasflugel
Libelle H-301-B high performance glider for the first time. The
following weekend, July 4th 2010, he took it up for a flight lasting
more than five hours.
The Wendlands purchased the glider from Washington
resident and soaring club member Don (Doc) Johnson.
Two New Private Pilots
After several postponements due to rain, wind snow and
sickness it was finally time for more check rides at
Flanagan Field. Freddy and Sarah Wendland were ready on
January 31st,
Freddy's
16th birthday, but the weather didn't agree. On Saturday
March 6th several members showed up to support them.
The weather was great but just a bit cool out in the
breeze. Freddy went first and passed the oral and
practical with flying colors. When Sarah got started on
her turn the rest of us set up a table and chairs in the
sun out of the wind and ordered lunch. Sarah and examiner
Ed Holland took a break with us for some Andy's cheese
burgers. They got back to work on the exam and the rest of
us headed back to the runway 03 for a K7 flight.
Sarah passed her exam with flying colors as well. We now
have two new private pilots in the club. Congrats to Sarah
and Freddy! Click

SSA Magazine Article Submission
Below is an article that Ed Holland submitted to the SSA
Magazine Editor. He submitted the above picture to go
along with it. Hopefully we'll see it in the magazine
soon. I think Ed enjoyed his day at Flanagan Field.
On Saturday, March
6, 2010, I had the pleasure of giving two special
checkrides. Whereas checkrides take place every day,
these were a very special event. It was at the
beautiful Flanagan Field which is home of East
Carolina Soaring Club that I gave a brother and sister
each their private pilot checkrides on the same day!
Freddy and Sarah Wendland, age 16 and 17 respectively,
earned their private pilot-glider certificates. Under
the watchful eye of their father and flight instructor
Frank Wendland, they were both well prepared for the
test and flew a great ride. Since doing my first
checkride with this group in December, I found in them
a great bunch of fun-loving people who just have an
unparalelled love for the sport of soaring. This
airport is very interesting in the fact that it's home
to many short wing Pipers. Also, one of the soaring
club members flies a Hatz biplane off Flanagan Field.
A visit there is a real treat for anyone who enjoys a
nice relaxing day at a grass field where fun and
friends are abundant. Best wishes to Freddy and Sarah
as they take to the skies as the club's newest
certificated pilots. Keep up the good work folks!!!

Two Fresh Glider Ratings
On Sunday December 6th, two club members added the
glider rating to their Private Pilots License. It was cold
and the field was wet but with the help of some dedicated
club members David Manning and Calvin Mayo managed to get
their flights in. The check rides were scheduled for
Saturday but were rained out. Congratulations to David and
Calvin. The two are pictured below with CFI-G Frank Wendland.

Bob Neil Flies Solo

It
was a very cold Saturday, December 12th, but that didn't
keep a hand full of club members from flying. Bob Neil
first made a few training flights. Bob's third flight
turned out to be his first solo.
Congratulations to Bob.
David Manning removed Bob's shirt tail and we all
signed it.
Freddie and Sarah both completed their final
preparation flights with their Dad. They should now be
ready for their January check rides.
